HC Deb 06 August 1980 vol 990 cc117-8W
Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is his latest approximate estimate of (a) the numbers and (b) the percentages of the total unemployment figures represented by (i) unemployed females and (ii) persons registering as unemployed after early retirement; and if he will give all figures both in respect of the United Kingdom and Scotland.

Mr. Jim Lester

On 10 July 1980 there were 632,000 registered unemployed females in the United Kingdom, representing 33.3 per cent. of the total. The corresponding figures for Scotland were 86,000, 36.3 per cent.

It is estimated that there are about 90,000 to 100,000 registered unemployed people in Great Britain aged 55 or more but under the statutory retirement age who are in receipt of occupational pensions.
