HL Deb 15 April 1980 vol 408 c271WA
The Marquess of AILESBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is their impression that there would be no difficulty in ensuring that Gibraltar remained a British naval base if only a satisfactory political settlement could be reached.

Lord CARRINGTON

I see no reason why the presence of the naval base should be at issue and I hope that, following my agreement with the Spanish Foreign Minister on 10th April, differences between us over Gibraltar can he overcome.
