HC Deb 14 April 1980 vol 982 c451W
Mr. Woolmer

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if, in view of the level of import penetration of nearly 20 per cent. now obtained by imports of tufted man-made fibre carpets from the United States of America, he will take immediate steps to protect British producers from large-scale market disruption.

Mr. Parkinson

Import penetration of MMF tufted carpets from the United States was estimated at 6.4 per cent. in the last quarter of 1979 and at 8.2 per cent. and 6.1 per cent. in January and February 1980 respectively. I am continuing to watch the situation, but I do not consider that these figures would justify a further approach to the Commission at the present time.

Mr. Woolmer

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what were the total imports of tufted man-made fibre carpets

Percentages of home demand 1979
First quarter Second quarter Third quarter Fourth quarter
Imports in total of which: 16 16 17 23
United States of America 4 4 5 7

Figures for each month and for the first quarter of 1980 are not available.
