HC Deb 23 March 1979 vol 964 cc202-3W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) whether he will appoint Lord McCarthy as chairman of the relativities and comparabilities commission and ensure that the salary paid is not above £10,000 per annum;

(2) whether he will appoint Professor Hugh Clegg of Warwick university as the chairman of the Government's proposed commission on comparability of pay in the public services; and whether the chairman's salary and the payments to the members of the committee will bear a relationship to the salaries of those persons whom they will be investigating.

Mr Harold Walker

My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister dealt with these matters in his statement about the establishment of a Standing Commission on pay comparability on 7 March and in his reply to the subsequent question put by my hon. Friend—[Vol. 963, c. 1251–1267.]

Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the various groups of workers whose services and conditions of employment are capable of being examined by the Standing Commission on pay comparability, the numbers of workers involved in each group, and the percentage increase in pay of each group since 1974 to the latest convenient date.

Mr. Harold Walker

I refer the hon. Gentleman to the statement made by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 7 March which set out the basis on which the Standing Commission will carry out its work. It is not possible to indicate the groups for which the necessary preconditions for reference to the Commission will be met.

Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish in the Official Report the terms of the contract with Professor Hugh Clegg and other members of the Standing Commission on pay comparability in respect of their service with that body.

Mr. Harold Walker

I refer the hon. Gentleman to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for Carlton (Mr. Holland) on 12 March 1979.
