HC Deb 23 March 1979 vol 964 c224W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated revenue arising from an increase in the employer's national insurance contribution of 1 per cent. and 2 per cent., respectively; and what would be the corresponding loss of jobs in the United Kingdom as a whole.

Mr. Joel Barnett

On the basis of the economic assumptions used for the Government Actuary's report on the Contribution Rerating Order 1978 (Cmnd. 7403) with similar assumptions for Northern Ireland, it is estimated that the United Kingdom yield from an increase in the employers national insurance contributions for the 1979–80 tax year of 1 per cent. or 2 per cent. of relevant earnings is £830 million or £1,660 million of which £740 million and £1,480 million respectively would be received in 1979–80. The figures exclude Treasury Supplement.

I regret that I am unable to give the hon. Member the information about employment he requests for reasons similar to those I gave the hon. Member for Perth and East Perthshire (Mr. Crawford) on 15 January.—[Vol. 960, c. 669.]
