HC Deb 23 March 1979 vol 964 cc223-4W
Mr. McCusker

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many vehicles are being cleared daily through the Newry Customs station en route to the Irish Republic; and what is the average time that is currently taken to clear a vehicle, the average number of vehicles awaiting clearance at any given time and the longest delay experienced by any haulier during the first two months of the current year outside any affected by industrial disputes.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

About 320 vehicles each day. Once properly completed documents are presented to Customs, the time taken to obtain clearance is about six minutes on average. Although there are wide variations in the flow of traffic, the average number of vehicles awaiting clearance by Customs is five. Industrial disputes excepted, the longest delay experienced by any haulier during January and February of this year was three hours.
