Mr. Thorne

asked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) whether the Port of Preston Authority has made an application for grant from the European regional development fund during the past two years;

(2) whether the port of Preston is entitled to a grant from the European regional development fund.

Mr. William Rodgers

The port of Preston is entitled to apply for grant from the ERDF but no application has been made by the port in the past two years. However, I understand the port management is now considering making an application.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport when he expects to receive and consider the report on Preston dock following the two-year viability study.

The two-year test period will end on 30 September next. My agreement with Preston borough council, the owners of the port, requires it to ensure that the general manager prepares, well before the end of the test period, an evaluation of the progress achieved and of the future prospects of the port. I shall receive a copy of that report.
