§ Mr. Kenneth Clarkeasked the Secretary of State for Industry what assessment the Government have made of the likely effect of recent events in Iran on sales of British manufactured goods in that country and levels of output and employment in the sectors of British industry most affected; and whether he will make a statement.
366W
§ Mr. Les HuckfieldIran took 2 per cent. of United Kingdom exports in 1978. The prospects for future exports will depend on the policies of the new Iranian Government and the level of activity in the country. It is, however, likely that there will be a marked reduction in exports of military equipment to Iran. The effect on employment will depend on the success achieved in securing alternative markets. The Government are keeping in contact with firms about the implications for their activities.
