§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount collected through corporation tax in 1977; and what that figure would have been if no company expenses and allowances had been offset.
§ Mr. Denzil DaviesReceipts from corporation tax in 1977–78 were £3,343 million. A tax of which the base did not allow deductions for ordinary business expenses (such as wages, purchases, depreciation of fixed assets, rent etc.) would be in the nature of a turnover tax rather than a corporation tax. A tax rate of the order of the corporation tax rates could not be contemplated for such a tax and I can give no estimate of its yield.

§ Mr. Denzil DaviesFor reasons of confidentially, I cannot give this information.
