HC Deb 05 March 1979 vol 963 cc559-60W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount collected through corporation tax in 1977; and what that figure would have been if no company expenses and allowances had been offset.

Mr. Denzil Davies

Receipts from corporation tax in 1977–78 were £3,343 million. A tax of which the base did not allow deductions for ordinary business expenses (such as wages, purchases, depreciation of fixed assets, rent etc.) would be in the nature of a turnover tax rather than a corporation tax. A tax rate of the order of the corporation tax rates could not be contemplated for such a tax and I can give no estimate of its yield.

percentage contribution of income tax to total tax collected in each year 1974 to 1978 for the following countries, Japan, the United States of America, France, West Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

No information is available from international sources for 1978. The figures for 1974 to 1977 are set out below:

Mr. Roy Hughes

Mr. Denzil Davies

For reasons of confidentially, I cannot give this information.
