HL Deb 10 July 1979 vol 401 cc868-9WA
The Marquess of SALISBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many people were employed in the administration of education at central Government and local authority level in 1938 and in 1978.

THE MINISTER of STATE, DEPARTMENT of EDUCATION and SCIENCE (Baroness Young)

No firm directly comparable figures are available. I estimate that the numbers of people employed in the administration of education at central Government level in 1938 and 1978 were as follows:

1938 1978
England and Wales 1,086 2,098
Northern Ireland 139 673
Scotland 246 503
University Grants Committee 5 105
Totals 1,476 3,379

Numbers employed at local authority level in 1938 are not available. The 1978 numbers are included in the Joint Manpower Watch figures of local authority employees, but staff engaged in the administration of education cannot be identified.
