(i) how many licensees under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 are currently working at the Babraham agriculture research centre, (ii) what is the nature of experimental work in progress there, and for what purposes authorised by the 1876 Act, and (iii) by whom are certificates granted for the performance of operations on goats' udders, observation holes in cows' sides, and metal implants in the brains of sheep.
§ Lord BELSTEAD(i) 65 licensees regarding the Institute of Animal Physiology, Babraham, as their main place of work reported the commencement of experiments there in 1978. (ii) Research on the physiology and biochemistry of farm animals. (iii) Certificates are signed by the persons specified in Section 11 of the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 but do not come into force until allowed by the Secretary of State.
