HC Deb 02 July 1979 vol 969 cc415-6W
Mr. George Gardiner

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) how many councils of county districts have given him notice under section 8 of the Caravan Sites Act 1968 of their objections to proposals for the location of caravan sites within their areas;

(2) if he will list the local inquiries that have been held or are pending under section 9 of the Caravan Sites Act 1968;

(3) how many local authorities have given notice of the number and location of proposed caravan sites in their areas under section 9 of the Caravan Sites Act 1968.

Mr. King

Since January 1976 district councils in England have pursued 23 objections under section 8 of the 1968 Act; only one case involved a local inquiry and that was held under planning procedures. No inquiries have been held under section 9 of the 1968 Act.

It is now inappropriate to consider those authorities which may have given notice of proposals before local government reorganisation. Since December 1974 the Department has had full co-operation from local authorities in compiling annual returns of proposed and provided sites in England and Wales. A list of sites provided as at 1 January 1979 has been placed in the Library as stated in the reply by my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State to a question by the hon. Member for Harlow (Mr. Newens) on 20 June.
