asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (i) what is the estimated construction cost of the Kielder reservoir in Northumberland;
  2. (ii) what reservoirs are planned, the construction of which has not yet been started, and what is the estimated construction cost of eah; and
  3. (iii) what is the estimated annual expenditure on construction of reservoirs between now and the year 2000.

(i) The estimated construction cost of Kielder reservoir excluding ancillary works is £38.8m at 1978 Survey prices.

(ii) Water undertakers in England and Wales plan to construct the following reservoirs subject, where appropriate, to their obtaining the necessary statutory powers. The estimated costs are for the reservoirs only and do not include costs of ancillary works.

(iii) It is regretted that this information is not available. Certain water undertakers are considering the options for meeting forecast water demands towards the end of the century and further reservoirs may be required, but firm decisions have not been taken.
