asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the latest figures relating to jobs created or saved in the Walsall area, either directly by his Department or through the Manpower Services Commission.

Details of the numbers of jobs created or saved in the Walsall area as a result of schemes administered by my Department or the manpower services commission are as follows:

  • Temporary employment subsidy—4,865 jobs.
  • Small firms employment subsidy—7 jobs.
  • Special temporary employment programme—66 people.
