asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the estimated number of jobs that has been saved by the various employment protection measures in each of the last five years.

Following is the information:

The schemes administered by my Department which have saved jobs are the temporary employment subsidy, which was introduced on 18 August 1975 and the short-time working compensation scheme, which operated from 15 May 1978.

The number of jobs involved in applications approved are given below:

* To 28 February.

This reply covers only the schemes for which my Department is responsible and not the programmes operated by other Departments.
