§ Mr. Peytonasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for each £1 sterling spent in retail shops on food purchases, how much goes, respectively to (a) British farmers and growers, (b) overseas farmers and growers, (c) the processing and packaging industry, (d) wholesale suppliers, (e) retail suppliers and (f) the the distributive trade.
§ Mr. John SilkinNo precise or up-to-date statistics are available. However, it is estimated that in 1977 British farmers and growers received about 29p, and importers 22p, of each £1 spent by the consumer on food. The balance, which includes indirect taxes, was split approximately as to two-fifths each to manufacturing and retailing and one-fifth to wholesaling.
