HC Deb 03 April 1979 vol 965 c596W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if British electronic equipment exists for garages to use in applying his Department's annual safety check on vehicles; and, if so, if he will ask garages to use British equipment wherever possible rather than imported equipment.

Mr. Horam

No electronic equipment is required to carry out the MOT test on motorcycles, cars or light goods vehicles in authorised garages. Electronic components may be embodied in the roller brake testers which must be used after 1 June 1979. There is a range of acceptable equipment on the market, and it is not always easy to distinguish where British made testers incorporate foreign components or vice versa. But in so far as a distinction can be made, I hope that garages will give British manufacturers a fair opportunity to supply their needs.
