HC Deb 24 October 1978 vol 955 cc854-5W
Mrs. Winifred Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what investigations he is carrying out into the search by the Atomic Energy Authority for nuclear disposal sites in Scotland; what drilling permissions have been sought and what have been granted, and where; what is the comparative position in England and in both Scotland and England; and on how many occasions planning permission has been applied for and refused.

Mr. Denis Howell

The Atomic Energy Authority is carrying out preliminary research on behalf of myself, my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Wales, to assess the suitability of deep geological formations for the possible eventual disposal of appropriately treated radioactive waste. Our Departments are kept fully informed of progress and are keeping the programme under continuous review.

The Atomic Energy Authority has submitted four planning applications. The first sought permission from Kyle and Carrick District Council to drill test bore-holes on the Mullwharcher ridge in the Carrick Forest. I understand the council is expected to decide the application today. Two applications to drill in the Chillingham and Usway Forests in the North of England were rejected on 26th June by Northumberland County Council. I understand the Atomic Energy Authority is preparing an appeal against the decision. A fourth application to drill on the Ulbster Estate in Caithness was approved on 23rd June by the Highlands Regional Council.
