HL Deb 19 June 1978 vol 393 c944WA
Lord AVEBURY

asked her Majesty's Government:

How many complaints were made under Section 49 of the Police Act 1964 against police officers from the Vine Street Police Station, London, W.1, in each of the years 1975, 1976 and 1977 respectively; how many such complaints were determined in each of these years, and in how many of the cases determined were the allegations of the complainant partly or wholly upheld.

Lord HARRIS of GREENWICH

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that in 1976 investigations were completed involving 114 complaints against officers from Vine Street Police Station, of which one was substantiated; the figures for 1977 were 150 and nine respectively. In some cases the complaint may have been made in an earlier year, and the incident giving rise to the complaint may have occurred while the officer was temporarily at another location. I regret that the other information requested is not readily available.
