Lord LYELL

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they are taking to ensure the survival in the United Kingdom of helix romana (the edible snail).

The PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY of STATE, DEPARTMENT of the ENVIRONMENT (Baroness Birk)

TheHelix pomatia (Roman or edible snail) is not at present considered to be endangered in the United Kingdom. It is one of a number of species whose vulnerability is being considered by the Nature Conservancy Council in its quinquennial review under the Conservation of Wild Creatures and Wild Plants Act 1975.
