§ The Prime MinisterThe Lord Chancellor is responsible for promoting general reforms in the civil law, for the procedure of the civil courts and for the administration of the Supreme Court—Court of Appeal, High Court and Crown Court—and county courts in England and Wales. He advises the Crown on the appointments of judges and certain other legal officers, and is himself responsible for the appointment of masters and registrars of the Supreme Court, district and county court registrars and magistrates, 643W and for the filling of a large number of Crown livings in the Church of England. He is responsible for giving general guidance in respect of the civil legal aid, advice and assistance schemes. In addition, the Lord Chancellor is Speaker of the House of Lords.
