HC Deb 13 July 1978 vol 953 c742W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, in view of the fact that the local authorities chief executives and other top paid local government officers have their salary scales based on those of civil servants, to what extent, in the implementation of the Boyle committee's report on top salaries, he estimates that local government expenditure would rise if the same rate of increases as proposed in the Boyle committee's report were applied throughout local government service.

Mr. Shore

The salaries of local authority chief executives and senior officers are determined not by the Review Body on Top Salaries but by negotiations with the local government employers. The estimate requested would not therefore be meaningful.
