HC Deb 13 July 1978 vol 953 cc742-3W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what provisions currently exist for recognised trade unions to be represented on the managing bodies of local authorities' superannuation funds; how many local authorities include a trade union representative on their managing body; and if he will introduce legislation to seek to make the inclusion of trade union representatives on their managing bodies mandatory.

Mr. Guy Barnett

The Local Government Superannuation Regulations 1974 provide for local authorities' superannuation funds to be administered by county councils, London borough councils and the Greater London Council. Managing committees of funds are subject to section 104 of the Local Government Act 1972, which excludes from membership of local authority committees persons employed by the particular authority. I have no information as to membership of fund representatives not so excluded. The Government's proposals for member participation in the management of occupational pension schemes were outlined in the White Paper "The Role of Members in the Running of Schemes". Cmnd. 6514, published in June 1976.
