Mr. Robin F. Cook

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police officers have resigned in each of the most recent two years for which figures are available; and what percentage of the total figures were uniformed and plain clothes, respectively.

Dr. Summerskill

5,166 police officers in England and Wales resigned during 1977 and 3,287 during 1976. No details are available of the branches in which they were serving at the time of resignation.
