HC Deb 30 January 1978 vol 943 c10W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the number of aliens who registered on the electoral roll in response to his recent Press and publicity campaign for all persons to register; what action he intends to take to rectify the position; why his advertisements were incorrectly worded asking all persons rather than British subjects to register; and what was the cost of the campaign.

Mr. John

We have no reason to believe that any aliens have been registered as electors as a result of this publicity campaign. Its purpose was to persuade all concerned to check the electors' lists to ensure that those entitled to vote were included on the register. The cost of the campaign was £34.400.
