HC Deb 15 December 1978 vol 960 cc493-4W
Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what institutions of scientific research located in Wales are supported from public funds;

(2) how many scientific research institutions there are in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively, wholly or partly supported from public funds ; and how much public money is spent in scientific research in each of the three countries.

Mrs. Shirley Williams:

In the area of civil science for which I am responsible the Agricultural, Medical, Natural Environment and Science Research Councils support 90 research establishments in England, 18 in Scotland and 6 in Wales. The cost in 1978–79 is expected to amount to: England £152,546,000; Scotland £16,153,000; and Wales £7,227,000.

The six establishments in Wales are:

Agricultural Research Council

Welsh plant breeding station, Aberystwyth

Medical Research Council

Epidemiology unit (South Wales), Cardiff Pneumoconiosis unit, Penarth

Natural Environment Research Council

Unit of marine invertebrate biology, Bangor Research vessels services, Barry

Institute of terrestrial ecology, Bangor

The location of an establishment in a particular country does not restrict its operations to that country.
