§ Mr. Parkasked the Secretary of State for Trade how many people are employed by foreign-owned companies in Great Britain; what is the productive capacity of these companies ; and what is the proportion of United Kingdom exports manufactured by foreign-owned companies operating in Great Britain.
§ Mr. Clinton Davis:The latest and only infomation available on employment is from the 1973 census of production, from which it is estimated that overseas controlled United Kingdom enterprises employed about 821,500 persons in United Kingdom manufacturing industry and that the value of their manufacturing gross output amounted to about £9,689 million. These estimates were published in table 18 of Business Monitor PA 1002 1973, report on the census of production, summary tables, a copy of which is in the Library. No information is available on productive capacity. Overseas controlled enterprises in both manufacturing and non-manufacturing accounted for about 24 per cent. of United Kingdom exports in 1973 and 26 per cent. in 1976 ; this information is obtained from the overseas transactions inquiries and published in Business Monitor, M4, overseas transactions, a copy of which is in the Library. Separate information is not compiled for overseas controlled enterprises in manufacturing.
