§ Mr. Buchanan-Smithasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will update for the latest available year the table published in the Official Report, 16th November 1976, c. 511, of the estimated tax revenue per head in each of England, Scotland, Wales and the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. Robert Sheldon,pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 25th July 1978; Vol. 954, c. 682.], gave the following information:
The latest estimates of taxes borne per capita—excluding national insurance contributions and local authority rates—in England, Scotland and Wales were given in my right hon. Friend's answer to my hon. Friend the Member for Birmingham, Selly Oak (Mr. Litterick) on 27th July. The estimate of taxes borne per capita in the whole of the United Kingdom in 1976–77 is £579.
I regret that there was an error in the answer given on 16th November 1976–[Vol. 919, c. 511.]; the estimate of tax borne per capita in Wales in 1975–76 should have been £427 and not £390.
The figures in this answer attribute taxes according to the areas where the tax burden is borne, not the point of collection, which is often a central point 626W or head office. Among the sources used are the annual survey of personal incomes and the family expenditure survey.
