asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the percentage of income taken in tax and national insurance for a wage earner on (a) 25 per cent. average earnings, (b) 50 per cent. average earnings, (c) average earnings, (d) twice average earnings, (e)

Mr. Denzil Davies,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 2nd August 1978], gave the following answer:

The information requested is given in the table below. Statistics of the total national debt are available only for 31st March in each year. The national debt relates only to the liabilities of the National Loans Fund and not to the debt of the whole central Government as defined in the national accounts. It includes official holdings of central Government debt held by other central Government funds. National debt per head of population is also shown at March 1978 prices.

five times average earnings, (f) 10 times average earnings in 1946, 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965, 1970 and all subsequent years assuming that he was receiving the following personal allowances: mortgage tax relief on a mortgage of three times annual salary, superannuation at 5 per cent. of annual salary and average life assurance at each income level.
