asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, how many psychogeriatricians are currently employed in the National Health Service.

Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, how many psychogeriatricians are currently employed in the National Health Service.

Mr. Moyle

At 30th September 1977, there were 1,045 consultants in the specialty of mental illness (adult) employed by the NHS in England and Wales. A large proportion of these would have some responsibility for the treatment of elderly patients, but psychogeriatrics as such is not recognised as a separate specialty in the National Health Service.
