HC Deb 02 August 1978 vol 955 cc376-7W
Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she has any plans for dealing with truancy.

Miss Margaret Jackson

The responsibility for action to combat truancy rests with local education authorities. My Department intends later this year to issue a circular on the education welfare service, which has an important role in relation to regular school attendance. Additionally, we shall shortly be publishing some information and advice for schools and local authorities based on two recent surveys by Her Majesty's inspectorate concerning provision for disruptive pupils and persistent truants.
