The future course of unemployment will depend on the extent to which international discussions lead to an expansion of world trade, on our success in bringing down our rates of inflation and, on the ability of our manufacturing firms to compete effectively.

We expect the impact of our special employment and training measures to increase this year, but this will depend on the response of employers, trade unionists and project sponsors in supporting the new youth opportunities programme and special temporary employment programme.
