HC Deb 27 April 1978 vol 948 cc686-7W
Mr. Litterick

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what steps will be taken to reduce delay to holiday traffic in arranging the works of repair to the M5 motorway in the West Midlands.

Mr. Horam

The dual two-lane section of the M5 motorway in Hereford and Worcestershire was opened to traffic in 1962. Over the next few years it will need substantial repair. Some disruption and delay to traffic is inevitable.

I have, however, decided to defer the start of this year's work until the end of October and so reduce delays to motorists during the summer months. Between West Bromwich and Oldbury (Junctions 1 and 2) essential repairs to the viaduct sections of the motorway are in progress and must continue throughout the summer.
