§ Mr. Spearingasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what 572W pilot projects for school leavers, comparable to those mentioned in an oral answer on 18th April last, have been mounted either by local education authorities or by her Department.
§ Miss Margaret JacksonA number of schemes have been mounted by local education authorities to assist the preparation of young people for work and their transition to employment in areas including Coventry, Cleveland, Leicestershire, Leeds, Liverpool and Sunderland. At national level, the Government launched in 1976 a programme of pilot schemes of unified vocational preparation aimed primarily at young people in employment who received no further education and little or no systematic training. To date about 50 such schemes have been mounted by industrial training boards, colleges of further education and other agencies. The Schools Council sponsored research into careers education and guidance between 1971 and 1977. In collaboration with the TUC and CBI, it is currently engaged in the schools council industry project which embraces projects in the areas of five local education authorities. My Department is also financing the following projects
Construction of job knowledge indices (Hatfield Polytechnic).Individual family and school influences on the first year of employment (University of London, Institute of Psychiatry).A Community Approach to the Transition from School to Work (Church of England Board of Education).Careers Guidance Integration Project (National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling—Project jointly financed with the EEC Commission).
