HC Deb 17 April 1978 vol 948 cc43-4W
Mr. Townsend

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection when he next intends to meet the chairman of the Post Office Users' National Council.

Mr. Maclennan

It is with deep regret that I must inform the House that the Chairman of the Post Office Users' National Council, Lord Peddie, died last Thursday. I am sure that the House would wish to join me in expressing our deepest sympathy to his family.

Lord Peddie was the Chairman of the POUNC from its creation under the Post Office Act 1969 and steered it through its formative years from obscurity to the best known of the NICCs. During this busy, sometimes hectic, time Lord Peddie gave the Council strong and effective leadership. He brought to POUNC a wide knowledge of consumer affairs and the experience built up from many years of public service. He will be a difficult man to replace.
