HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 c846W
Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what arrangements he is making to rescue the 100,000 plus Rhodesian patrials who might wish to return to the United Kingdom should the Anglo-American proposals result in widespread bloodshed.

Mr. Luard:

The aim of our proposals is to end the bloodshed and to pave the way for a settlement in Rhodesia which will provide a safe and secure future for people of all races inside the country.

Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs why there is still no British mission in Salisbury to keep Her Majesty's Government informed of opinions and developments relevant to a settlement in Rhodesia.

Mr. Luard:

It would be premature to establish a British mission in Salisbury. A member of Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service has been there on temporary duty since my right hon. Friend's visit on 1st September. His primary task is to answer questions about the proposals for a settlement set out in the Government's White Paper (Cmnd. 6919), but he also sends my right hon. Friend regular reports on opinions and developments in Rhodesia.
