HC Deb 11 November 1977 vol 938 cc270-1W
Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Chancellor of the Excheuer what would be the cost at 1977 survey prices of freeing repair and maintenance work from value added tax.

Mr. Robert Sheldon:

The cost of zero rating repair and maintenance work in the construction industry would be about £125 million a year at current prices.

Mr. McCrindle

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the position in the other EEC countries on the payment of value added tax by trade associations.

Mr. Robert Sheldon:

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Braintree (Mr. Newton) on 30th June. —[Vol. 934, c. 309–10]. —As from 1st January 1978 the position in the Community will be governed by the Sixth Directive on VAT, and I would draw the hon. Member's attention to the Value Added Tax (Trade Unions and Professional Bodies) Order which was laid before the House yesterday to bring the United Kingdom position into conformity with the directive.
