HC Deb 09 November 1977 vol 938 cc110-1W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if his Department is monitoring the side effects of the drug Trasicor (oxprenolol), manufactured by Ciba Ltd.

Mr. Moyle:

All drugs marketed in the United Kingdom are monitored for adverse reactions by the Committee on Safety of Medicines. The group of betaadrenoceptor blocking agents including Trasicor (oxprenolol) is subject to particular scrutiny by a panel of experts which is examining the scientific aspects of therapy with these drugs, in the light of the pattern of serious effects which was associated with the drug practolol. I am advised that evidence to date does not suggest that any of these beta-blocking agents will produce the same pattern.
