HL Deb 05 May 1977 vol 382 c1227WA
Lord KENNET

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Under what rules and conditions are Soviet vessels fishing in British and other European Fishery zones, now that the Soviet Union and the European Community have again failed to reach a long-term agreement.

Lord STRABOLGI

Pending the conclusion of negotiations with the USSR, Soviet fishing in the fisheries zones of Member States is restricted to the species, quantities and areas authorised by Council regulation (EEC) No. 745/77. These fishing rights are granted on condition that Community vessels may continue to fish within 200 miles of the USSR in the Barents sea. The regulation also limits the number of Soviet vessels licensed by the Community which may fish for the allocations at any time. Soviet vessels are subject to any conservation, supervisory or other measures in force in Member States' respective zones.
