Baroness YOUNG

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (i) whether the letter from the Managing Director of the Post Office published inThe Timesof 23rd March represents the Post Office's final conclusions on the matter of Sunday collections,
  2. (ii) when the trial period of one year now being studied by the Carter Committee is due to elapse,
  3. (iii) whether its report and conclusions will be made public, and
  4. (iv) what advice the Post Office have received from the National Users' Council and other mail users'organisations on the matter.

Lord WINTERBOTTOM

The decision, announced in April 1976, to review the withdrawal of Sunday collections after a year was made by the Post Office, not the Carter Committee. The noble Baroness should, therefore, write to the Post Office on this question, and on the advice which it has received from the Post Office Users' National Council and other mail users' organisations. The Carter Committee is free to consider this subject if it so wishes. The Carter Committee's report and conclusions will be made public.
