HC Deb 24 June 1977 vol 933 c607W
Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

asked the Attorney-General what financial saving will be achieved by his proposal in the Administration of Justice Bill to cease the register of county court bad debt judgments for debts between £10 and £30.

The Attorney-General

I estimate the eventual saving at about £100,000 a year. This would be reduced by any associated reduction in fee income.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

asked the Attorney-General what estimate he has made of the cost of the increased number of court cases, if the register of county court bad debt judgments applies to debts of £30 or more, instead of £10 or more as at present.

The Attorney-General

This must depend on the future efficacy of credit control, so that any estimate could only be hypothetical, and none has been made. The cost of simple actions for debt, the majority of which are determined by default, is small.
