asked the Secretary of State for Scotland in view of the official publication on 20th June of a detailed analysis of offences for drunkenness in the first three months of 1977, when he expects to be able to provide information on the numbers of murders, attempted murders and crimes of violence in 1976.

Examination of the reported cases of murder in Scotland in 1976 is now complete. Corrected, in accordance with normal practice for the annual Criminal Statistics, in the light of judicial determinations up to the end of the year, the number of cases of murder made known to the police is 63.

Provisional figures of attempted murder and crimes of violence made known to the police in 1976 are 159 and 4,442 respectively. Crimes of violence are defined as murder, attempt to murder, culpable homicide, assaults, threats, rape, assault with intent to ravish and indecent assault.
