HC Deb 24 June 1977 vol 933 cc601-2W
Mr. McCrindle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will introduce legislation to seek to change the definition of a charitable trust so as to include the promotion of sport.

Dr. Summerskill

The report of Lord Goodman's Committee on Charity Law and Voluntary Organisations set up by the National Council of Social Service includes a recommendation that the encouragement of sport and recreation should be recognised as a charitable object, provided that the necessary elements of altruism and benefit to a sufficient section of the community are present. The Government are considering this in conjunction with the Committee's other recommendations.
