HC Deb 23 June 1977 vol 933 c509W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will publish a table showing the point of entry price of food from Commonwealth countries; and if, in the table, he will indicate the cost added to comply with obligations incurred as members of the EEC.

Mr. Bishop

Information on the import prices of all items of food imported from Commonwealth countries could be supplied only at disproportionate cost. Moreover, prices of particular products vary according to differences in quality and presentation. Subject to this reservation, the average unit values of the main food commodities imported from Commonwealth countries during April were as follows:

Commodity Supplying country Price £ per tonne (cif)
Beef Botswana 1,114
Lamb New Zealand 704
Wheat Canada 90
Barley Australia 41
Butter New Zealand 610*
Cheese New Zealand 527*
Sugar Mauritius 162*
* Special import price.

Current rates of duty are published in the United Kingdom Customs Tariff, a copy of which is available in the Library of the House. Rates of levy and of monetary and accession compensatory amounts vary from time to time; they are published in the Official Journal of the European Communities and may be obtained from the Intervention Board for Agricultural Produce.
