§ Mr. Moateasked the Secretary of State for Transport what investigations has been undertaken by his Department into defective brake fluid as a cause of accidents; and whether he has any evidence that defective brake fluid or so called vapour lock has any statistical significance as a cause of road accidents.
§ Mr. HoramThe Transport and Road Research Laboratory is investigating the problem of defective brake fluid, with particular attention to vapour lock. Preliminary results indicate that vapour lock is unlikely to occur in this country except under abnormally severe conditions or where there is a defect in the braking system which causes an unusually high brake temperature to be developed.
Accident investigations have not produced any instance where an accident could be attributed to brake failure caused by vapour lock.
