HC Deb 17 February 1977 vol 926 c363W
46. Mr. Michael Spicer

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what he expects will be the likely effect of Greek membership of the EEC on the horticultural industry of the United Kingdom.

Mr. Strang

Any direct effect at the time of accession would probably be small since Greek horticultural produce does not generally compete immediately with our own. Our main imports are lemons, melons and peaches. The pattern of economic production within an enlarged Community might, of course, alter, but our study so far of longer-term prospects suggests that factors other than Greek membership are likely to have a greater effect in determining in what sectors British horticulture has the highest potential.
