HC Deb 10 February 1977 vol 925 cc789-90W
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of the total places available at Dundee College could be filled by students from the surrounding area.

Mr. McElhone

It is not possible to make a precise forecast of the number of qualified applicants from any particular area.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, after the decision was made to construct Dundee College, at what stage it became clear that all the available places at the college could not be filled.

Mr. McElhone

The college was designed to be a permanent part of the teacher training system.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the earliest date on which the intention to transfer students, lecturers and employees from other colleges in Scotland to Dundee College was put forward.

Mr. McElhone

My right hon. Friend's proposals for teacher training were first made in his consultative paper of 17th January.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what were the reasons for the construction of the accommodation and facilities at Dundee College.

Mr. McElhone

The decision to build a new college was based on expected demand for teacher training places and the inadequacy of the original building.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what was the entire cost of the construction and erection of Dundee College;

(2) who were the builders, architects and designers involved in the construction of Dundee College;

(3) whether the cost of the construction of Dundee College was in line with the figures and estimates, approved beforehand.

Mr. McElhone

The cost of construction has not yet been finalised, but is at present estimated to be £3.57 million, about £0.25 million more than the latest approved amount; these figures exclude fees, furniture and equipment.

The builders and design team were:

Main Contractor—Charles Gray (Builders) Ltd.

Architects—Thoms & Wilkie

Quantity Surveyors—John M. Duguid & Co.

Structural Consultants—Ove Arup & Partners

Mechanical and Electrical Services Consultants—Wallace Whittle and Partners.
