HC Deb 10 February 1977 vol 925 c759W
Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what has been the outcome of his consideration of a reference to beer prices to the Price Commission.

Mr. Hattersley

It is clear that the level of public concern about beer prices remains high, and my colleagues and I have agreed that it is necessary to establish the facts. I have therefore referred to the Price Commission for examination and reportthe prices and margins in the manufacture and distribution in the United Kingdom of beer which is sold by retail for consumption on licensed premises".

I have asked the Price Commission to report by 31st July 1977. I should emphasise that the decision to make this reference does not imply that prices are unjustified or that there is evidence of profiteering.
