§ Mr. Merlyn ReesI have discussed the problem with chief officers of police and am planning with my colleagues in other Departments a conference to discuss what further measures can be taken to complement the considerable efforts240W which are already made locally by the police and others. The Criminal Law Bill, which is being considered in another place, proposes substantial increases in the maximum fines and amounts of compensation which offenders may be ordered to pay by magistrates' courts for offences including those associated with vandalism.
