HC Deb 15 December 1977 vol 941 cc407-8W
Mr. George Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he intends to make any response to the Report on Preventive Medicine from the Expenditure Committee (First Report, Session 1976–77).

Mr. Ennals

Yes. My colleagues and I greatly welcome the Expenditure Committee's Report, which makes a valuable contribution to public discussion of the important role of preventive medicine in promoting better health. We are glad in particular to note the committee's views that individual members of the public should be encouraged to accept greater responsibility for their own health and that of their families, and that more emphasis should be given generally to prevention and health education. A White Paper entitled "Prevention and Health" has been published today (Cmnd. 7047) which replies to the Committee's report in the broader context of the Government's policies on prevention in the National Health Service and in other fields.
